I have used the old fashioned cookie presses before, and am not a novice in the kitchen. I liked the ratchet to express the dough onto the cookie sheet. I like that there is a storage capacity for the cookie dies. This unit cleans beautifully in the dishwasher and with the right amount of dough does a good job of creating nicely designed butter cookies. However, when the unit is full, the screw on top actually pops off partway, forcing you to unscrew it completely and reattach. Used on a clean un-greased cookie sheet the cookie dough attaches nicely but don't try a non stick pan. Also, because of the ratchet it stops expressing dough while there is still enough dough for about 8 more cookies. I shaped the extra into small balls which flatten into round cookie shapes. It isn't terrible, but I expected something with the kitchenaid name to be wonderful.
